Funding School Security: Essential Grants for Safer Learning Environments

Did you know that schools can access safety grants to fund security improvements and help create safer learning environments?

From grants for vape detectors and panic buttons to access control systems and video security, there are several funding opportunities from federal, state, and charitable sectors available for school security.

Here’s a look at a few of the grants available.

Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant Program (TVTP): Offered by the Department of Homeland Security, this grant funds schools and nonprofits to prevent targeted violence and terrorism and can be used for upgrading existing security systems, training staff, and enhancing emergency preparedness. The TVTP is renewed annually, and schools can apply for it several times, though only one application per funding track is allowed. Grants can reach up to $1.5 million.

Stronger Connections Grant Program (SCGP): Managed by the U.S. Department of Education, this grant supports schools in enhancing student safety and health through technological upgrades and training programs. The grant is distributed to State Educational Agencies (SEA), which awards funds to eligible school districts. Total appropriations can reach $1 billion, with the maximum award varying by state. These grants are dispersed by individual states and are under review for continuation.

Project SERV: This grant, also administered by the Department of Education, provides financial support to schools recovering from violent or traumatic events. Schools submit applications outlining their recovery needs to receive funding, with amounts determined on a case-by-case basis.

State-Specific Grants and Private Grants: Many states along with local jurisdictions and local law enforcement agencies offer grants to assist with regional safety concerns. Additionally, private organizations provide funding opportunities for increased school security.

Administered by FEMA, the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) helps nonprofit organizations, including schools with 501(c)(3) status, improve physical security in response to targeted risks. Schools may receive up to $150,000 per site, with a maximum of $450,000 across three sites. Grants are available annually.
